Malindi and Watamu coast

Insider's guide

A local guide to Malindi & Watamu.

Where to swim, what to eat and the day trips worth waking up early for — curated by the team who lives here.

The coast, distilled

Two towns, one stretch of paradise.

Malindi is the lively older sister — Swahili history, an Italian-flavoured food scene and wide town beaches. Watamu, twenty minutes south, is quieter and famed for its marine park, turtles and that impossibly turquoise water.

Use this guide as a starting point. When you stay with us, ask the team — we'll match the tides, season and your pace to the right plan.

Practical tips

Know before you go.

Best time to visit

Dry, sunny weather runs July–March. December–February is peak. April–June brings the long rains — quieter and greener.

Getting around

Tuk-tuks and boda-bodas are cheapest in town; agree the price first. For day trips, we can arrange a trusted private driver.

Money & SIM

M-PESA is used everywhere. Pick up a Safaricom SIM at the airport with your passport — data is fast and inexpensive.

What to pack

Reef-safe sunscreen, modest cover-ups for town, water shoes for the reef and a light layer for breezy evenings.

Safety

The coast is relaxed and friendly. Use taxis after dark, keep valuables out of sight on the beach, and respect Swahili customs in town.

Tides matter

Snorkelling, sandbank trips and dhow cruises are all tide-dependent. Ask us — we'll plan around the best window during your stay.
