Best Time to Visit Malindi & Watamu: A Month-by-Month Weather and Tide Guide

By Goldermeer Linda — Couzy Crib Accommodation.
Malindi and Watamu sit just 20–30 minutes apart on Kenya's beautiful north coast, sharing nearly identical weather, warm Indian Ocean waters, and breathtaking beaches. Whether you're planning a romantic escape, a family holiday, a workcation, or an adventure by the sea, understanding the seasons, weather, and tides will help you make the most of your stay.
The Big Picture
The Kenyan coast experiences two main monsoon seasons.
Kaskazi (Northeast Monsoon) — December to March
- Hot, sunny weather
- Calm seas
- Excellent underwater visibility
- Ideal for snorkeling, diving, fishing, and boat trips
Kusi (Southeast Monsoon) — April to September
- Cooler temperatures
- Stronger ocean winds
- Rougher seas
- Great for kitesurfing and scenic beach walks
The coast also experiences long rains from April to June and short rains in October and November.
January — Hot, Dry & Calm
One of the best months to visit. Expect sunshine, warm temperatures around 29–30°C, calm seas, and perfect beach weather. Best for snorkeling, diving, dolphin tours, fishing, and family holidays.
February — Peak Beach Season
Usually the driest month of the year. Enjoy crystal-clear water, calm ocean conditions, beautiful sunsets, and relaxing beach days.
March — Warm & Tropical
March is often the hottest month. Early March remains mostly dry before humidity increases toward the end of the month — a perfect time to enjoy calm waters before the rainy season begins.
April — The Green Season
April receives the heaviest rainfall, but showers are usually concentrated in the afternoon. Expect beautiful green scenery, fewer tourists, excellent accommodation deals, and peaceful beaches.
May — Quiet & Affordable
Rain continues, making this one of the most affordable months to visit. Ideal for travelers looking for budget-friendly accommodation, relaxation, privacy, and longer stays.
June — Cool Ocean Breeze
The rainy season fades, bringing cooler temperatures and refreshing coastal winds. Perfect for exploring historical sites, nature walks, cultural experiences, and relaxing by the beach.
July — Dry & Breezy
Cool weather makes July extremely comfortable — perfect for family holidays, beach walks, and outdoor adventures. The ocean can be slightly rougher due to stronger winds.
August — One of the Best Months
Dry, sunny, and pleasantly cool. Excellent for beach holidays, wildlife excursions, exploring Watamu Marine National Park, and photography.
September — Peak Travel Season
Many locals consider September the perfect month. You'll enjoy dry weather, comfortable temperatures, sunny skies, and slightly calmer seas than August.
October — Warm with Occasional Showers
Temperatures begin rising as the northeast monsoon approaches. The short rains are unpredictable, making October a great shoulder-season destination.
November — Tropical & Relaxing
Warm weather returns, with occasional showers. Excellent for travelers looking for fewer crowds and attractive accommodation offers.
December — Festive & Vibrant
December marks the beginning of the Kaskazi season. Expect calm seas, warm sunshine, Christmas and New Year celebrations, and high demand for accommodation.
Understanding the Tides
Malindi and Watamu experience two high tides and two low tides every day. Although tides occur year-round, seasonal winds have a greater impact on ocean conditions.
Kaskazi Season (December–March)
- Calm seas
- Excellent snorkeling
- Better diving visibility
- Comfortable boat excursions
Kusi Season (April–September)
- Stronger winds
- Rougher waters
- Great conditions for kitesurfing
- Cooler beach weather
If you're planning snorkeling, diving, fishing, or a dhow cruise, always check the daily tide chart. Low tide can expose reef flats, while mid to high tide provides the best marine experience.
